As of January 1, 2022, the No Surprises Act is in effect. This federal law protects clients from unexpected medical bills, including those for mental health services. For clients with insurance, the law prohibits surprise billing in certain situations such as emergency care or when services are provided by out-of-network providers at in-network facilities, unless proper notice and consent are given. For clients who are uninsured or self-pay, providers are required to give a Good Faith Estimate (GFE) of expected charges before services are rendered. If the final bill is at least $400 more than the estimate, clients have the right to dispute the charges through a formal resolution process.
